  1. BELIEF: All organizations have processes and systems. Your belief in the system motivates the people you lead.
  2. EXAMPLE: Your example creates confidence that the system works. You cannot lead where you will not go and, you cannot teach what you do not know.
  3. VISION: If the people you lead don’t know where they are going they can’t put up with the daily grind.
  4. PAY VALUE: Pay value is not always money or things. Real pay value is “esteem value”; elevating a person’s esteem motivates.
  5. TRAINING: Train for results and knowledge will follow. Training creates confidence.
  6. SUCCESS: See to it that the people you lead succeed early. Getting their “nose blooded” creates fear instead of confidence. Fear causes creative avoidance.
  7. EXPECTATION: The people you lead won’t give you any more than you expect. Expect them to succeed. Expect effort. Expect results.
  8. STANDARDS: Standards create pride in the organization. A “not just anyone can work here” attitude gives pride. The difference between a manager and a leader is the leader gets people to “want” to meet the standards. The manager pushes people around with the standards.
  9. OBJECTIVES: If I was going to help someone go somewhere but I didn’t know where they were going, how would I know when they got there?
  10. WRITTEN GOALS: What is the difference between a goal and a wish? A written plan!
  11. MEASUREMENT: Daily measurement causes the person you lead to decide daily to work the plan which creates good habits.
  12. CONFRONTATION: Confrontation is not threats and ultimatums. Threats and ultimatums have never worked. Confrontation is showing a person what is keeping them from succeeding.
