New years resolutions are an interesting way to look back at your last year and set goals. Fact is that 80% of people fail to stick to their goals by February. Can’t even remember those from 2018.
What’s wrong with that picture?
Could be it’s the resolutions you set for yourself? Are they wishy-washy like “lose some weight”, “get rid of most of the e-mails in my inbox?” or “write a least one blog a week this year” or a crazy one like “become as fat as I was the first time that I ever thought I was fat”.
Here are a few helpful thoughts from the book Atomic Habits.
1. If you are having a hard time changing a habit, it is not the habit, but the system you are using. Examine your system
2. The difference between 32 degrees and 33 degrees. One is rock solid and the other is mush. Keep working on good habits to make them rock solid
3. How long does it take to change a habit? It is not time, it is repetition. If we do it long enough it makes a habit. I have heard it takes 21 days, but repetition is really what makes habits.
4. Habits are the entrance ramp to the highway.
5. The Two minutes rule. Start a new habit with 2 minutes a day for a week plus. Just remember to do it every day if you want it to become a habit. In the book he said read something for 2 minutes a day every day. Exercise is some very specific way for 2 minutes a day. Remember it is repetition that forms habits. You will extend it to longer times once you make it a habit.
6. Habits create the foundation for mainstay in your life.
7. There is no end to making new habits.
8 If one new habit will change your life, that would be amazing, but if you made many new habits over time that would dramatically change your life with remarkable results.
9. Small habits don’t add up, they compound.
No better time to begin a new habit than today.
